Jennifer Tichon PhD has specialized in the psychological aspects of virtual environments (VEs) since 2001. Addressing the questions related to how VEs engage and affect people cognitively has led to specific focus investigating the role of stress in dynamic, high stress work environments and the ability of simulator-based training to replicate and inoculate against this stress. An early collaboration with the University of Missouri-Rola funded by the US Army investigated training first responders to terrorist attacks via simulation. Since that time her research and publications reflect an increasing expertise in simulation-based training and complex cognitive skill development. Recent collaborations with industry focus on training to improve decision-making & problem-solving skills in pre-accident conditions (Rail & Construction), improving safety induction and mines rescue response with VR (Mining). Her expertise has been recognized through an invitation to collaborate with the United States Air Force to address the current lack of objective evaluation, underpinned by theoretical understanding, of simulation-based cognitive skills training. Dr Tichon has been awarded an ARC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, published over 40 refereed publications, and received over $1.6M in competitive research funding.
